One thing that I would like to make a goal for this paper is to make sure that my thesis is clear and that all the claims that I make throughout my paper relate back to my thesis. To help take the steps to make sure that this happens I am going to make sure to go through my paper and write out all of the claims that I have in my paper. Next I am going to make sure that I look back and see if I mention all of these claims in my opening paragraph/thesis. Following this I will make sure that all the quotes I put in to support my claims actually make sense. Finally I will read over all the claims I have made next to my thesis and make sure that I have all of the information that I need. One thing that I struggle with is making sure that I have a strong conclusion at the end  that helps to bring the entire paper together. I tend to just end up either restating the same exact thing that I already said in the beginning or just doing a summary. To help improve this I am going to get help from my writing lab teacher so I am able to have new techniques to improve my conclusion.

I would like to include photographs throughout my paper to make it so that others reading are able to better understand the point that I am trying to get across. I may also add in certain texts that I think stand out twice, or bolded in my paper as well. This will help make it so that the quotes that I want to use will stand out to those who are reading my paper, and to make sure that my point is definitely getting across. For visual mode, I think that I want to include pictures that portray the way that today’s society views beauty. This will aid me in explaining how I’m trying to describe how exactly I am trying to describe their perspective on beauty. Also, overall the images that I chose will help to give a visual on the different perspectives of how people are viewing beauty. If I can find one, I may also include a video clip on a similar opinion of mine about beauty to help better the claims that I am making throughout my paper.

Working Outline

Introduction paragraph: Personally, I believe that beauty is found on the inside, which is contrary to what most of society believes. Society finds beauty in what they can see with their own eyes rather than the meaning or story behind the object or person itself.

Thesis: Beauty is something that every person in society views differently and has their own perspective on. I feel as though the people in today’s society do not look for the deeper meaning behind the things that they find beautiful. Instead of forming a background on the reason for something that they find beautiful, people in today’s society tend to just judge a book by its cover.

Claim: Most people in today’s society seem to have the stereotypical idea about what they consider to be beautiful. Instead of creating their own opinions people tend to just go with the flow as to what society considers to be beautiful.

Quote:  “To regard beauty as a luxury adornment or a social signifier was to miss the true potential of the experience.”

Claim: You, yourself, get to decide what you consider to be beautiful. You are able to control the emotions you have towards something, and you can either be persuaded by society or form your own opinion.

Quote: “the idea that beauty lies in the eye of the beholder.”

Claim: You should always think about the bigger picture behind what you find to be beautiful.

Quote: “If we want to understand beauty, we can’t just talk about things we find beautiful. We have to talk about our lives.”

Claim: Most people today don’t seem to think that something other than an object or person could be considered beautiful. A story is able to be beautiful as well to.

The article I chose is  Discover Magazine called “Beauty is Objective and Subjective”. I chose this article because it portrays beauty from multiple perspectives so I think this will be extremely helpful to help enhance my argument about how important beauty is. Having many views on what people think is beautiful and how it affects them is very interesting to me and this article was very helpful for me. This will also help me incorporate the idea of science behind beauty into my essay.

The first podcast that I will be using is Syris Hackett’s podcast https://vocaroo.com/i/s1z4Y20tNmim and,  the second podcast that I will be using is Tehya Casey’s https://tcasey.uneportfolio.org/124-2/ . I chose these two podcasts because I found the people that they interviewed points of view on beauty was extremely inspiring and unique. I enjoyed how both podcasts portrayed beauty in their own way. The person that Syris interviewed was able to explain how beauty can still be found in sad situations. The person Tehya interviewed viewed beauty as something that is not materialistic and what society views as beautiful, and how it is something natural and more personal to her. Both of these podcasts truly inspired me and are ones that really stuck out to me and we be extremely helpful in my essay.

Personally, I believe that beauty is found on the inside, which is contrary to what most of society believes. Society finds beauty in what they can see with their own eyes rather than the meaning or story behind the object or person itself.  Armstrong comes across with the same opinion when he states. “To regard beauty as a luxury adornment or a social signifier was to miss the true potential of the experience.” He is explaining how if you don’t think about the deeper meaning in beauty you miss the potential of what you could see in something. One quote that really stood out to me was one that explains “the idea that beauty lies in the eye of the beholder.” You decide how you view something and it is up to you to have your own perspective. You can either view an object with an open mind or a closed mind. “If we want to understand beauty, we can’t just talk about things we find beautiful. We have to talk about our lives.” We must look for the deeper meaning behind things in life. I feel as though many people around me in life, and just society all together seem to have the mind set about something being beautiful from looks on the outside and tend to judge a book by its cover.

I chose to read chapter 7 “So what? Who cares?” Saying why it matters. Throughout my paper I was having trouble making sure that I hit all of my main points describing why the arts and sciences should be mixed together. I needed to explain who, why and what it mattered to instead of just stating facts without any reasoning why to back up my claims. Reading this chapter gave me a better understanding on how to do so, and it provided me with many templates to help fix my work. I made sure that my claims connected with the quote given and I better explained why my claims mattered so much.

Before:  In Mark Boslough writing “We Must Protect U.S. Investment in Scientific Knowledge” he introduces the idea that science can be for everyone, no matter who you are. “One does not have to be a scientist to think scientifically.” Anyone is able to study anything in a way that makes them think, learn, and observe. It is not just scientists who do things this way.  Without changing the overall science bases and adding art to them, it can be used as a compromise. This is able to help us get a better understanding and view on new inventions that are trying to be created every single day.

After: A dental hygienist can put artwork on the wall to help explain procedures clearly to the patients so they are able to understand and feel more comfortable with what is being done. In Mark Boslough writing “We Must Protect U.S. Investment in Scientific Knowledge” he introduces the idea that science can be for everyone, no matter who you are. “One does not have to be a scientist to think scientifically.” At first, people may think that you need to be a scientist to understand anything that is going on. Even people who are not scientific thinkers will be able to understand a difficult procedure better if they have a visual right in front of them describing what is going on. Having the image of a procedure that is going on right in front of the patient will help them to become relaxed and to better understand what is going on.

I believe that science should be approached with an open mind, and their should always be room for improvement to be added. “Gilbert accepted that explanation, even though he had arrived at the crater thinking it was formed by an impact, (a good scientist does not allow personal feelings to get in the way of evidence).” (Boslough). Brining the arts into the sciences can causes an emotional side. “The arts help us cope with these issues by engaging, not avoiding, the deep emotions of intimate loss involved and retelling over and over again the story of the human condition and its limits. (Yo-Yo Ma). The arts and sciences should remain separate because they both have their own thing to offer.  The sciences should be more just the facts instead of brining the emotional side of art in.

Many people would argue that the arts should be incorporated into the everyday learning process of STEM ( science, technology, engineering, and math). One person who strongly believes this is cellist and songwriter Yo-Yo Ma. He believes that STEM should be adding the arts into the mix and become STEAM. He states “STEAM will help us get there by resolving the education problem. Kids will then go to school because it is a passion and a privilege, not a requirement.” Although this may be true for some students, it is most definitely not true for all. I believe art should be kept separate from the science and math categories, because art has its own things to offer. I think putting the two together takes away, as well as limits what they would be able to offer if they were taught separately. For this reason, I believe that the STEM system should remain in the learning curriculum.

  1. The essay written by Yo-Yo Ma was originally published on the “World Post” which is an online news and blog. Yo-Yo Ma, a cellist and songwriter, started performing when he was five years old.He has been able to win over seventeen Grammy Awards and he has produced more than ninety albums. He also graduated from Juilliard School and Harvard University.
  2. I noticed when reading that he Yo-Yo Ma wanted the people reading to understand the importance of art and what it has to offer. He also was addressing how art is able to teach us something that is able to connect people together. He states in the essay “We are all addressing the same issues with different names attached to them. STEAM will help us get there by resolving the problem. Kids will then go to school because it is a passion and a privilege, not a requirement.” He is saying how one day he hope people do things because they have a passion to do them and it is not just forced.
  3. Yo-Yo Ma wants to make sure people never forget what art has taught us and make sure that it is always relevant in today’s world.
  4. Words:

-Consciousness: The state of being awake and aware of one surroundings

-Bandwidth: This is the range of frequencies within a given band

-Invigorate: Give strength or energy
