One thing that really stood out to me while reading “Is it OK to make art?” by Rhys Southan was “Any break we take from working to reduce suffering throughout the world is like having a leisurely nap beside a lake where thousands of children are screaming for our help.” This really made me realize how many people take what they have for granted and the fact that it isn’t going on in their lives so its not affecting them. This quote shows how important it is to take a step back, realize what you have, and also always see what you can do to help others. There was another quote in the passage that stated “Suppose you saw a child drowning in a pond: would you jump in and rescue her, even if you hadn’t pushed her in? Even if it meant ruining your clothes? It would be highly controversial to say ‘no; -and yet most of us manage to ignore those dying of poverty and preventable disease all over the world, though we could easily help them.” When reading this it made me realize how we all need to take a step back and really think about those dying of poverty and what to do to truly help and  end it.

One other quote while reading “Is it OK to make art” by Rhys Southan that stood out to me was “‘earning to give’- getting a well-paid job and donating carefully. This shows that if you make a good amount of money donating a little of it to charity can help more than you think. Something is better than nothing, and it is more than lots of people are doing. The metaphor made in the passage “Artists, meanwhile, paint the beautiful landscape in front of them while the rest of the world burns.” stood out to me because it shows while people are doing great and not having any issues they forget to help the people that are struggling in life.
